The City's Pioneer Widening and 50th Place Roundabout project will widen Pioneer Street, construct a new roundabout at 50th Place, and build 50th Avenue north to a new portion of Pioneer Canyon Drive.
When completed, there will be a four-lane roadway along Pioneer Street from just west of Royle Road to I-5, and a new east-west collector roadway (Pioneer Canyon Drive) connecting 50th Place to an extension of 56th Place. This will provide two parallel routes to handle current and future traffic in the area.
Traffic between Interstate 5 and Royle Road is expected to increase as new commercial development planned in the area is constructed and opened. While addressing the necessary improvements for traffic capacity and flow, the City has an opportunity to design the area to be more pedestrian and cyclist friendly.
PROJECT STATUS
(updated July 11)
Construction mobilization has begun for the Pioneer Widening and 50th Place Roundabout project. Phase 1 will include the construction of 50th Place. When Costco opens, 50th Place will have two lanes open to traffic and a turn lane from Pioneer Street onto 50th Place to provide a route for traffic from west Ridgefield to access Costco.

City Project
Pioneer Street | This project will widen Pioneer Street to a four-lane section from Rosauers to the 56th Place roundabout. The new segment of Pioneer will include two travel lanes and a shared use path, separated from vehicles by a planter strip, in either direction. |
Roundabout | A new roundabout will be constructed at 50th Place. |
50th Place | 50th Place will be built north to connect to a new east-west parallel route, Pioneer Canyon Drive, being built by the developer of Union Ridge Town Center/Costco. This segment of Pioneer Canyon Drive will connect 50th Place to an extension of 56th Place, also being built by the Union Ridge Town Center and Costco developer. |
Pioneer Canyon Drive | The City project will include a short western leg of Pioneer Canyon Drive at 50th Place, to provide access to the new Ridgefield YMCA. |
Developer Projects
As demonstrated on the map below, the construction of N 56th Place, N 53rd Place and the eastern leg of Pioneer Canyon Drive will be completed by the developer of Union Ridge Town Center. This project will include the construction of a new roundabout at N 56th Place and Pioneer Canyon Drive. The developer of Ridgefield Gateway will be adding a turn lane and other improvements to the north side (westbound direction) of Pioneer Street between I-5 and 56th Place.
The developer will also construct modifications to the Pioneer Street and Interstate 5 interchange that will create additional lane capacity. This design is currently being reviewed with Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The improvements will accommodate the expected increase in traffic to the area.
These improvements are expected to be completed in 2024.

Coordination
The City's Pioneer Widening/50th Place Roundabout project is just one piece of of a group of transportation infrastructure improvements planned for the area. Several projects will be completed by private developers, paying for the increased infrastructure needs their projects will create.
The map below shows all of the projects, color coded by whether the project will be done by the City, or by a Developer. This is a conceptual map and does not show exact road alignments.

The City’s Pioneer Widening/50th Place Roundabout project team has been closely working with the teams for Union Ridge Town Center/Costco, Mountainview Dental, and Ridgefield Gateway to ensure all utilities and road improvements are coordinated both in design and in timing. Some of the developer infrastructure including roads and utilities are underway, and there has been a continuous coordination process between those contractors, the City and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
