The City's Pioneer Widening and Discovery Drive Roundabout project will widen Pioneer Street, construct a new roundabout at Discovery Drive, and build N Discovery Drive to a new portion of Pioneer Canyon Drive. The project also includes the construction of 5 major culverts, upgraded water, sewer and storm utilities, and a joint utility trench.

When completed, there will be a four-lane roadway along Pioneer Street from just west of Royle Road to I-5, and a new east-west collector roadway (Pioneer Canyon Drive) connecting N Discovery Drive to an extension of 56th Place. This will provide two parallel routes to handle current and future traffic in the area.

Traffic between Interstate 5 and Royle Road is expected to increase as new commercial development planned in the area is constructed and opened. While addressing the necessary improvements for traffic capacity and flow, the City has an opportunity to design the area to be more pedestrian and cyclist friendly.

PROJECT STATUS
(updated November 7)

Pedestrian Safety Improvements Installed at Pioneer and 56th Place: To improve pedestrian crossing safety at the Pioneer Street and 56th Place roundabout, the city has installed a flashing beacon crossing on the west end of the roundabout and is removing the crossing on the east side. This move provides a higher level of protection for pedestrians crossing north/south at the intersection. The city's contractor will utilize single lane closures during work hours on Pioneer Street Monday, November 10 through Wednesday, November 12 to build new curbs and close the east crossing.

All lanes on Pioneer Street are open outside of work hours — a major milestone in the project!

  • Crews will still need intermittent lane closures during work hours (7 AM–5 PM) as they complete remaining tasks. The new roundabout at Pioneer Street and Discovery Drive will continue to operate as through lanes until landscaping and artwork are installed.
  • Discovery Drive and N 53rd Place are open to traffic but may close as needed during work hours. At least one of these access points will always remain open.
  • Check before you go! Visit our Traffic Page for live cameras at the project area.

Please remember that the speed limit on Pioneer between Royle and 56th Place is 25 mph, at all times, not just during construction hours. Following this limit keeps everyone—drivers and workers—safe.

Over the next several weeks, you’ll see crews completing finishing touches, including planting about 30,000 plants throughout the corridor to make this new roadway as beautiful as it is functional.

Thank you for your continued support and patience throughout this project.

City Project

Pioneer StreetThis project will widen Pioneer Street to a four-lane section from Rosauers to the 56th Place roundabout.

The new segment of Pioneer will include two travel lanes and a shared use path, separated from vehicles by a planter strip, in either direction.

RoundaboutA new roundabout will be constructed at Discovery Drive.
Discovery DriveN Discovery Drive will be built to connect to a new east-west parallel route, Pioneer Canyon Drive, being built by the developer of Union Ridge Town Center/Costco. This segment of Pioneer Canyon Drive will connect Discovery Drive to N 56th Place, which was built by the Union Ridge Town Center developer.
Pioneer Canyon DriveThe City project will include a short western leg of Pioneer Canyon Drive at Discovery Drive, to provide access to the future Recreation and Community Center.

Developer Projects

The construction of N 56th Place, N 53rd Place and the eastern leg of Pioneer Canyon Drive was completed by the developer of Union Ridge Town Center. The developer's project included the construction of a new roundabout at N 56th Place and Pioneer Canyon Drive.

The developer of Ridgefield Gateway will be adding a turn lane and other improvements to the north side (westbound direction) of Pioneer Street between I-5 and 56th Place. The developer also completed modifications to the Pioneer Street and Interstate 5 interchange to create additional lane capacity.

Coordination

The City's Pioneer Widening and Discovery Drive Roundabout project is just one piece of a group of transportation infrastructure improvements planned for the area. Several projects will be completed by private developers, paying for the increased infrastructure needs their projects will create.

The map below shows all of the projects, color coded by whether the project will be done by the City, or by a Developer. This is a conceptual map and does not show exact road alignments.
