Pioneer Widening and Discovery Drive Roundabout
The City's Pioneer Widening and Discovery Drive Roundabout project will widen Pioneer Street, construct a new roundabout at Discovery Drive, and build N Discovery Drive to a new portion of Pioneer Canyon Drive.
When completed, there will be a four-lane roadway along Pioneer Street from just west of Royle Road to I-5, and a new east-west collector roadway (Pioneer Canyon Drive) connecting N Discovery Drive to an extension of 56th Place. This will provide two parallel routes to handle current and future traffic in the area.
Traffic between Interstate 5 and Royle Road is expected to increase as new commercial development planned in the area is constructed and opened. While addressing the necessary improvements for traffic capacity and flow, the City has an opportunity to design the area to be more pedestrian and cyclist friendly.

- Pioneer Street Traffic Impacts
- Lane Closures and Shifts begin Monday, May 19: To allow the contractor to complete widening work on Section 4, lane closures and shifts will be in effect on Pioneer Street between Royle Road and Discovery Drive beginning May 19 through mid-August. Lane closures will impact the Royle Road roundabout. No left turns will be permitted onto S 47th Ave from the westbound lane of Pioneer Street.
- One lane open in either direction on Pioneer Street between 56th Place and Royle Road through September. In September, the contractor will complete final lift paving and Pioneer Street will have two lanes in either direction from 65thAve to just west of Royle Road.
- Shoulder work, lane shifts and intermittent flagging should be expected on Pioneer Street between Royle Road and 56th Place through September.
- The new roundabout at Pioneer Street and Discovery Drive is functioning as through lanes for both directions.
- Discovery Drive/Pioneer Canyon Drive
- Discovery Drive CLOSED between Pioneer Street and 53rd Place until mid-August to complete Sections 1 and 5.
- The City is actively coordinating with In-N-Out Burger to ensure all required traffic management measures are in place in advance of their anticipated opening this summer. This effort involves collaboration with Ridgefield Police, Ridgefield Public Works, Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue, Washington State Patrol, and the Washington State Department of Transportation. While In-N-Out has not yet shared an opening date, the City is prepared to work closely with the Pioneer Street Widening Project team to help maintain safe and steady traffic flow in the area.

Please remember that the speed limit on Pioneer between Royle and 56th is 25 mph, at all times, not just during construction hours.

Developer Projects
The construction of N 56th Place, N 53rd Place and the eastern leg of Pioneer Canyon Drive was completed by the developer of Union Ridge Town Center. The developer's project included the construction of a new roundabout at N 56th Place and Pioneer Canyon Drive.
The developer of Ridgefield Gateway will be adding a turn lane and other improvements to the north side (westbound direction) of Pioneer Street between I-5 and 56th Place.
The developer will also construct modifications to the Pioneer Street and Interstate 5 interchange that will create additional lane capacity.

Coordination
The City's Pioneer Widening and Discovery Drive Roundabout project is just one piece of a group of transportation infrastructure improvements planned for the area. Several projects will be completed by private developers, paying for the increased infrastructure needs their projects will create.
