Pioneer Street and Discovery Drive
The City of Ridgefield is in the midst of infrastructure upgrades along Pioneer Street near the interchange with I-5. The road improvements include a new roundabout on Pioneer Street at Discovery Drive, between 56th Place and Royle Road, currently under construction. On March 27, City Council approved a design concept for this centrally located landmark.
The plan for the center island came from Ridgefield’s Roundabout Committee – a one-of-a-kind volunteer group tasked with developing and recommending roundabout center island designs to City Council. Pioneer and Discovery is the third roundabout the Committee has developed a recommendation for since formation in March 2024.
The Roundabout Committee recommended two concepts for consideration by the City Council. After discussion, Council approved Option No. 1, with minor adjustments. The concept features multiple layered pollinator-friendly native plants and metal sculptures that represent bird species found locally and at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. The Pioneer Street and Discovery Drive roundabout is currently under construction by the City’s Pioneer Widening contractor and will open to traffic in a couple of weeks. The contractor will complete the landscaping and build a base for the art as part of the Pioneer Widening project, and the City will procure and install the sculptures later this year.
North Discovery Drive serves as an access road to new businesses along Pioneer Canyon Drive, N 53rd Place and N 56th Place, including the future Ridgefield Family YMCA. A future south Discovery Drive will connect to S 11th Street/Wells Drive and improve connectivity in the Ridgefield Junction area.
The Roundabout Committee’s next assignment is at S Royle Road and Wells Drive. The Committee meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Columbia Assembly Room at the Ridgefield Administrative and Civic Center (RACC), 510 Pioneer Street. Meetings are open to the public and include an opportunity for public comment both in person, and online via Zoom.
