Royle Road is being planned for a traffic lane in each direction, a center turn lane at intersections (except at roundabouts), bike lanes in each direction, and sidewalks on each side. When completed, bicyclists and pedestrians will be able to travel without interruption between Pioneer Street and Hillhurst Road.

Our Road Construction and Traffic Impact page found here, will be updated regularly with any significant impacts that may affect the community.

S Royle Road CLOSURE

April 1-5
Both lanes of S Royle Road from about S 8th Way to S 15th Street/S Wells Drive will be CLOSED Monday, April 1-Friday, April 5 (Ridgefield School District Spring Break). This closure is necessary to complete a large roadway cut on Royle adjacent to the Fieldcrest entrance as part of the Royle Road Corridor Phase 2. The complete closure will reduce the overall project duration and result in cost savings to the City of Ridgefield.

  • Detour: A detour will be in place on Pioneer Street to S 56th Place, S 6th Way, Timm Road, and S 11th Street/Wells Drive. See Detour Map (PDF).
  • Local access to the Cloverhill neighborhood will be provided at the intersections of S Royle Road/S 10th Way and S 15th Street/S 43rd Ave.
  • After April 5, the entrance to the Cloverhill neighborhood at S Fieldcrest Drive will remain closed until the approach to the new S Royle Road alignment can be constructed in the following weeks.

Project Background

In 2016, City Staff and City Council identified the need for improvements for S. Royle Road, which has been an integral part of Ridgefield's road system for many decades, and is an important north-south transportation route for residents, businesses and visitors.

S. Royle Road also connects with S. 15th Street/ Wells Drive, an east-west collector route which connects developing residential areas to the west in the area known as the “Doughnut Hole” with the industrial and business park areas to the east toward Timm Road.

The City has divided the Royle Road corridor improvements into three phases:

  • Phase 1 (Complete): Central Section of Royle Road, between S. 19th Street and north of S. 15thStreet/ Wells Drive.
  • Phase 2 (Under Construction): Northern Section of Royle Road, between north of South 15th Street and south of South 3rd Way.
  • Phase 3 (Timeline TBD): Southern Section of Royle Road, between Hillhurst Road and South 19th Street.

Current Steps

Phase 2, Northern Section of Royle Road began Fall 2023. Completion is expected late in 2024.

The City is seeking funding to assist with the cost of Phase 3, Southern Section of Royle Road. Funding options are to be finalized by 2024. There is currently no construction timeline for this phase.

Phase 1 (Fall 2022-Spring 2023): Central Section of Royle Road, between S. 19th Street and north of S. 15thStreet/ Wells Drive.

Phase 1 of the project is currently under construction with the estimated completion date of April 22, 2023.

    • During this phase you'll see:
      • Completion of roundabout at S. Wells Dr/ S. 15th St
      • Center median/ turn lane
      • Bike lanes and sidewalks
      • Street light installation

We will start to see major progress over the next few months, and with that will come occasional lane closures to stay on track with the estimated completion date of April 22, 2023 for Phase 1.

    Next Steps

Phase 2 (Summer 2023): Northern Section of Royle Road, between north of South 15th Street and south of South 3rd Way.

    • Phase 2 of the project will involve the completion of utility relocations and consolidation into a “joint utility trench” prior to beginning road work. The City is working with the design team to stage the road and sidewalk work in three phases, so as to minimize the need for long-term road closures to do the work. Short-term closures may be needed to tie in the various phases and shift work zones. This phase is nearing design and permitting completion as well as right-of-way acquisition. The project is anticipated to be going to bid this spring with construction starting in the summer of 2023. Completion of Phase 2 is expected late in 2024.

Phase 3 (Timeline TBD): Southern Section of Royle Road, between Hillhurst Road and South 19th Street.

    • Phase 3 of the the Royle Road improvements will be on the southern section of the road. Phase 3 will allow to replace a narrow culvert over Gee Creek, which impedes the water flow and fish passage along the creek, with a much improved culvert that includes a widened roadway corridor as well as removing impediments to stream flow and fish passage. The southern section of the Royle Road improvements are in the initial planning stages, with the City seeking grant funding to assist with the cost of the culvert replacement. Funding options are to be finalized by 2024.
