New Pedestrian and Bike Safety Infrastructure has been installed and is active in the Hillhurst School Zone!

For the past several years the City of Ridgefield has partnered with the Ridgefield School District to address ongoing safety concerns at the crosswalk on Hillhurst Road in front of Ridgefield High School. In 2022, we installed flashing crosswalk signs and told our community that we would seek funding for a more significant overhead crosswalk signal.

In 2024, the City was successful in securing a “Complete Streets Early Opportunity Grant” from the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) for the Hillhurst School Zone Pedestrian and Bike Safety Project. On July 25, City Council awarded a construction contract for the project so that work may begin.

The Hillhurst School Zone Pedestrian and Bike Safety project included three major pieces:

  1. Installation of an overhead pedestrian crossing signal on Hillhurst Road in front of Ridgefield High School (RHS).
  2. Installation of a new school zone speed limit flashing beacon sign on Royle Road approaching the intersection with Hillhurst Road.
  3. Relocation of the existing flashing beacon pedestrian signage and warning signs from RHS to a new, enhanced crosswalk between Sanderling Park neighborhood and Sunset/View Ridge Schools campus. This crosswalk will include ADA compliant ramps and improvements to the connecting walkways.

Installation for all pieces is complete and all infrastructure is fully functioning.

How to Use a HAWK Signal

The new signal on Hillhurst Road at Ridgefield High School is called a High-Intensity Activated CrossWalk (HAWK). Unlike a traditional traffic light, the HAWK signal remains dark when not in use. Here is what to expect:

  1. Activation - Pedestrians press the button to activate the signal, then wait.
  2. Overhead Flashing Yellow - The overhead light flashes yellow to warn drivers to prepare to stop.
  3. Overhead Solid Red - Vehicles must stop, pedestrians received the walk signal.
  4. Overhead Flashing Red - Drivers must stop by may proceed if the crosswalk is clear.

The signal is in operation 24/7, but only activates when a pedestrian presses the button to request to cross. Pedestrians should still practice safety by looking both ways before entering the street.
